Water in Mangystau is hard, so white buildup on faucets and scale in the kettle appear especially fast. The good news: you can remove them with simple products found in every kitchen.
Why Aktau gets so much buildup
Hard water contains a lot of calcium and magnesium salts. When it dries and heats up, they settle as white buildup on faucets, tile and glass and turn into scale inside appliances. It is not dirt but mineral deposits, so they need to be dissolved with acid, not rubbed with an abrasive.
Citric acid and vinegar for faucets
Soak a cloth in a citric acid solution (one packet per glass of warm water) or table vinegar, wrap it around the faucet and leave it for 30–60 minutes. The buildup softens and comes off easily with a sponge. For the faucet aerator, unscrew it and soak it in the same solution.
Scale in the kettle and appliances
Fill the kettle with water and citric acid, bring it to a boil and leave it for 20–30 minutes, then boil clean water and pour it out. You can descale an iron and a coffee machine the same way, but always check the appliance instructions.
Shower, glass and tile
On glass shower doors and tile, buildup is removed with the same acidic solution, followed by rinsing and wiping dry. We do a deep clean of a bathroom with limescale as part of a deep cleaning, and there is a separate article about it.
Prevention: wipe things dry
Buildup will not appear if you wipe the faucet and glass with a dry cloth after use: the salts simply do not have time to settle. The habit takes 10 seconds but saves hours of fighting buildup later.
