Why grout darkens and how to keep it light

Cement grout is a porous material: it absorbs dirty water, grease and soap residue. Most often grout darkens not with age but from mopping the floor with the same water: the dirt goes into the pores along with the mop and stays there. Acidic products "for shine" do harm too: they slowly dissolve the cement, the grout becomes rough and gets dirty even faster. Epoxy grout hardly absorbs water and darkens much less. To keep light grout looking good for longer:

Change the water when you mop and rinse the mop more often
For regular cleaning, use products with a neutral pH
After a shower, squeegee the water off the walls and air out the bathroom
Wipe the backsplash by the stove once a week, before the grease sets in
Do not scrub grout with metal brushes or abrasives
Renew the protective sealer about once every 1–2 years, more often in the shower
