How to clean curtains and sheer curtains: washing, steaming or on-site cleaning

Sheer curtain and heavy curtains on the rod before cleaning

Sheer curtains and light curtains can usually be machine-washed on a delicate cycle at 30–40 °C without a hard spin, while heavy drapes, jacquard and coated blackout are safer to refresh with steam or clean on site. Start with the care label: it tells you the temperature, the spin speed and whether the fabric can be washed at all.

In brief
  • A crossed-out washtub on the label means "do not wash", and the letter P or F in a circle means the fabric is designed for solvent dry cleaning.
  • Sheer curtains are washed at 30–40 °C on a delicate cycle, in a laundry bag, with a spin of up to 400 rpm, and hung on the rod while still damp.
  • Yellowed synthetic sheer curtains are whitened with an oxygen-based product, not chlorine: chlorine often turns synthetics even yellower.
  • Roman and roller shades are not washed whole: they are vacuumed and spot-cleaned.
  • In windy, dusty Aktau, curtains get dusty faster: wash sheer curtains every 2–3 months and drapes every six months.

What the label tells you and how to test the fabric

The label is usually sewn into the top corner of the curtain or along the side edge. The main symbols:

  • Washtub with water and a number: washing is allowed, and the number shows the maximum temperature; one line under the tub means a delicate cycle, two lines mean an extra-gentle one.
  • Hand in a tub: hand wash only, in warm water.
  • Crossed-out washtub: do not wash, only steam cleaning or professional cleaning.
  • Circle with the letter P or F: solvent dry cleaning, and such curtains go to a workshop; W in a circle: professional wet cleaning.
  • Crossed-out triangle: no bleaching at all.

If there is no label, identify the fabric: the most common sheer curtain fabric, polyester, handles machine washing fine, while natural linen, cotton, viscose and silk can shrink. Test colorfastness on the hem: wet a corner with warm water and a drop of detergent and press a white cloth against it. If color comes off on the cloth, wash the curtain separately and in cool water. Be especially careful with long curtains: shrinkage of just 3% is about 8 cm on a 2.7 m curtain, and it will no longer reach the floor.

How often to clean curtains in Aktau

A typical guideline is sheer curtains every 3–4 months and heavy curtains every 6–12 months. In Aktau it makes sense to stick to the shorter end, or even clean more often: the wind brings fine sand, windows are open for long periods in summer, and a sheer curtain acts as a filter between the street and your apartment. A practical schedule:

  • sheer curtains in rooms: every 3 months;
  • sheer curtains in the kitchen and on windows left open all summer: every 2–3 months, since grease and sand add to the dust;
  • drapes and blackout: every 6 months;
  • between washes: vacuum with a brush attachment on low power every 1–2 weeks, from top to bottom.

If someone in the home smokes, or there are allergy sufferers or pets, shorten the intervals. Curtains are one of the main dust collectors in an apartment; we covered how to reduce dust overall in the article how to reduce dust in your apartment.

How to wash sheer curtains without ruining them

  1. Take off the hooks, rings and weights, then shake the sheer curtain out on the balcony or go over it with a vacuum cleaner.
  2. Soak for 1–2 hours in cool water with a little detergent. The water will turn gray: that is dust, and it is better to drain it before washing.
  3. Put the sheer curtain in a laundry bag so it doesn't catch on the drum, and fill the drum no more than halfway.
  4. Choose a delicate cycle: 30 °C for organza and voile, up to 40 °C for ordinary polyester, with a liquid detergent without chlorine.
  5. Spin up to 400 rpm or no spin. Take the sheer curtain out right after washing so creases don't set in.
  6. Hang it on the rod while damp: the fabric will straighten under its own weight, and you will hardly need to iron.

If it's very windy outside, wait with drying by an open window: wet fabric will pick up sand, and you'll have to wash it again. In hard water in Mangystau, powder works worse, and white synthetics gradually turn gray, so dose the detergent using the hard-water column on the package.

How to whiten yellowed sheer curtains without chlorine

Sheer curtains turn yellow from sun, kitchen grease, tobacco smoke and washing in water that is too hot. Chlorine bleach is not suitable for synthetics: it often doesn't whiten them but turns them even yellower, and the fiber loses strength.

Oxygen bleach based on percarbonate works. Dissolve it in warm water following the instructions (for synthetics, usually not hotter than 40 °C), soak the sheer curtain for 2–4 hours or overnight, then wash on a delicate cycle. Heavy yellowing is removed in 2–3 rounds. To be honest about the limits: if the fabric has yellowed from years of sun and worn fibers, it will never be fully white again, and in that case it is more sensible to buy new sheer curtains.

Blackout, velvet, jacquard and linen: rules for heavy fabrics

Heavy curtains are heavy, absorb a lot of water and react differently to temperature and spin. Follow the table, but the label has the final word.

FabricHow to cleanWhat to avoid
Sheer curtains, voile, organzaMachine wash, delicate cycle 30–40 °C, laundry bagChlorine, hot water, a tumble dryer
Blackout without coatingDelicate cycle 30–40 °C, light spinOverloading the drum, drying on a radiator
Blackout with a coating on the backVacuum, spot cleaning, steam from the fabric side, on-site cleaningWashing with a spin cycle, creasing, ironing over the coating
Velvet, velourVacuum in the direction of the pile, light steam from the back, cleaning at a workshopMachine washing, spinning, ironing over the pile
JacquardDelicate cycle 30 °C if the label allows it; for heavy ones, on-site cleaningTwisting, hot water, snags
LinenDelicate cycle 30–40 °C, iron while slightly dampHot water: heavy shrinkage
Roman shadesVacuum, spot cleaning; for a removable panel, follow the label and take out the slats firstWashing together with the slats and mechanism
Roller shadesVacuum with a soft brush, spot cleaning with a damp spongeSoaking, machine washing, rolling up while damp

A separate word on blackout: if the back is rubberized or "foam", hot water and a hard spin crack the coating and make it peel, after which the curtain starts letting light through. Velvet crushes in a washing machine, leaving creases and bald patches on the fabric. Jacquard made of blended threads can shrink unevenly, and the pattern will "warp".

Roman and roller shades: cleaning without washing

The fabric of roller shades is impregnated with a compound that keeps the panel's shape and protects it from fading and dust. Soaking and the washing machine wash the impregnation out: the panel goes wavy and stops rolling up evenly. So every 2–4 weeks go over it with a vacuum with a soft brush on low power, and remove spots with a sponge dipped in a soapy solution, using light motions without rubbing. Roll up the shade only when it is completely dry, or damp stains will appear on the roll.

The panel of Roman shades is often removable: if the label allows washing, take out the slats and wash the fabric like an ordinary curtain. Do not wet the mechanism and cords. A Roman shade with a non-removable panel is cleaned on site, just like a roller shade.

Steaming on the rod: when it is enough

A vertical steamer refreshes curtains well, smooths creases and partly removes odors without taking the fabric off the rod. Move it from top to bottom at a distance of 2–5 cm, without pressing it against thin organza, and test new fabric on the hem first. Velvet is steamed from the back or at a distance, blackout from the fabric side, not over the coating.

Hard water in Aktau quickly clogs a steamer with scale, and white splashes remain on dark drapes. If the manufacturer allows it, fill it with filtered water or a mix of filtered and distilled water. But steam refreshes, it doesn't wash: it won't remove a layer of dust, a greasy film on kitchen sheer curtains or stains.

When to clean on site and when to use a workshop

Cleaning curtains without taking them down helps when washing is inconvenient or risky: the drapes are heavy, the ceilings are high, complicated valances take a long time to hang back, and the fabric may shrink in the drum. It is also the solution for large windows and commercial spaces where curtains can't be taken down for long. Steam and extraction add little moisture, so polyester, cotton and linen curtains, blackout and jacquard tolerate this cleaning well and dry right on the rod in 1–3 hours.

But we honestly advise sending natural silk, velvet and high-pile velour, curtains with sequins and glued-on decor, or curtains with the letter P or F in a circle to a workshop. Curtain cleaning at Cleaning Lab is done right on the rod: sheer curtains, voile and organza from 600 ₸/m², drapes, blackout and jacquard from 800 ₸/m², Roman and roller shades from 1,000 ₸/m², minimum order 10,000 ₸. Send us photos and the curtain sizes on WhatsApp and we will tell you the price. Clean sheer curtains in front of cloudy glass don't look as good as you'd like, so it is convenient to combine curtain cleaning with window washing, from 1,500 ₸. And if the smell of tobacco or burning lingers throughout the apartment, after cleaning the curtains it is worth ordering ozone treatment: otherwise the smell will come back from the furniture and walls.

Questions and answers

Can curtains with grommets go in the washing machine?
Yes, if the label allows washing: grommets are usually plastic or coated metal. Wash such a curtain in a large laundry bag on a delicate cycle at 30 °C, so the rings don't bang against the drum or scratch it.
Do I need to iron sheer curtains after washing?
Most often not: if you hang the sheer curtain on the rod while damp, it will straighten under its own weight. Organza and voile can be ironed through a cloth at the lowest temperature or steamed if needed.
Why did my sheer curtains turn gray after washing?
Sheer curtains usually turn gray because of hard water, too little detergent or washing with colored items. Pre-soaking, dosing the detergent from the hard-water column and oxygen bleach at the temperature allowed on the label help.
How much does curtain cleaning cost in Aktau?
At Cleaning Lab, cleaning curtains without taking them down costs from 600 ₸/m² for sheer curtains, voile and organza, from 800 ₸/m² for drapes, blackout and jacquard, and from 1,000 ₸/m² for Roman and roller shades; minimum order 10,000 ₸.
