After a renovation, fine construction dust settles literally everywhere, even where no work was done. Here is a 7-step plan to get your apartment in order.
Step 1. Take out the trash and large debris
First clear the space of everything unnecessary: packaging, material offcuts, film and painter's tape. The less trash is left, the easier it will be to deal with dust and surfaces.
Step 2. Dry dusting from top to bottom
Work from the ceiling to the floor: ceiling, walls, light fixtures, cabinets. Go over them with a dry brush or vacuum first, so you do not smear the dust across surfaces and turn it into dirty streaks.
Step 3. Windows, frames and windowsills
Remove the protective stickers and film from the windows, then wash the frames, glass and windowsills of dust and mortar splashes. Windows collect an especially large amount of fine particles after a renovation.
Step 4. Traces of paint, mortar and primer
Carefully remove dried drops of paint, mortar and primer from walls, tile and floor. Choose products to suit the surface material so you do not leave scratches or damage the finish.
Step 5. Kitchen and bathroom
Scrub the tile and plumbing fixtures, remove limescale, and wipe the cabinet fronts and appliances. These areas collect the most construction dust and need especially thorough treatment.
Step 6. Floors in several passes
Construction dust does not wash off on the first try, so mop floors in 2–3 passes, changing the water regularly. That is the only way to remove the thin film left after the first wash.
Step 7. Finish and airing out
Check corners, baseboards and outlets: that is where dust most often remains. At the end, air out the apartment well to get rid of the smell of paint and construction mixes.
