Move room by room, not through the whole apartment at once. Finished moving things out of the bedroom? Wash it completely right away, and so on. That way you will not go back into rooms you have already cleaned and track dust over clean floors.
The old apartment: handing it over
If you were renting, a clean apartment at hand-over is your chance to get the full deposit back. Landlords look at the kitchen (stove, range hood, cabinet fronts), the bathroom (buildup, seams, toilet), windows and floor. These are the areas that most often become the reason for withholding part of the deposit.
Walk through the apartment through the landlord's eyes: look into the closets and the overhead storage, check the balcony, wash off furniture marks on the floor and walls. The closer the condition is to how it was when you moved in, the fewer questions at the deposit return.
The new apartment: before your things arrive
It is right to move into a new apartment when it is already clean. Empty rooms are the ideal moment to wash the floors, the insides of wardrobes, kitchen drawers, the bathroom and windows while nothing is in the way. After the furniture arrives, doing this will be several times harder.
Pay special attention to places you cannot reach later: behind built-in appliances, inside kitchen cabinets, in the storage room and on the upper shelves. Wash once in the empty apartment, and you move into a place that is ready.
The new apartment after a renovation
If the new apartment recently had a renovation, ordinary cleaning is not enough: construction dust settles everywhere and works into surfaces, and marks of paint, primer and grout remain on windows and tile. This calls for post-renovation cleaning, which removes fine dust from every crevice and washes off construction soiling. Only after it does it make sense to bring in furniture and belongings.
